st. stephen’s

along the wall lies
a row of knights whose names
were buried with them
under stained glass windows
that prism the light

the saints in their niches
cast long shadows on the
chequered marble;
i’m sure they never looked
so obviously benevolent

a millennium’s hurried confessions,
whispered prayers, fervent oaths
turn to dust beneath stone robes,
unstartled by the thunder
of chiming bells
