mandelbaum is enchanted
her pearls glitter.
years later, she will fling them
from a train window to a
black-curled italian girl.
the whiteness of her teeth
becomes all he needs to know of perfection.
years later, these teeth will be
picked to pieces by aryan hands.
her smile turns the sky
into a blue lagoon.
years later, that sky will be thick
with the ashes of millions.
"hanna kaiser," she says.
years later, his name will be
both their fate.
