In the River

The old South
of dusty roads and red clay hills,
river mud and cotton fields
linger still
and fill me with
simplicities of yesterday

where barefeet dangled from a bridge
as children watched
baptizing of the lost.

Some were made
of polished sand,
some of red clay hills;
cleansing all was a Godly man
of Mississippi River mud.
