Sons of Suicide

We gather in convoys of age, winding down backroads, having traded in the muscle cars for wagons, girlfriends for wives, aimlessness for careers, night for day, to return to a time when we were one school of salmon raging towards sex and death. Our headlights chase minnowy memories finning the surface of darkness, propelled by instinct, until invisible skeins lead us through the shallows and snags to an opening in the treeline. Below us, the headwaters boil with primal chants and bodies dressed in the blood of the tribe, battering against the current, helmet to helmet, under the lights of the astroturf stage. We now walk instead of run; sit instead of stand. We watch the shadows of our former selves sprint across the last open field, tilting beer cans in salute, envious that we are no longer the sons of suicide.
