Ancient Design
Imagine Yucca shaken
in primordial forests
by the thunderous walk of dinosaurs.
Dark sap fed upon rich soils
through centuries of rain.
Today a sentinel, it secures
the corner of my garden.
Blades whorl from its radial center.
A more loving evolution
would have dulled those razor tips.
A watchguard in armor, Yucca
supports the foreign burden
of a fallen branch.
Extended arms twist, then spring
as the limb falls groundward.
Released from the weight
rigid leaves spring taut,
one leaf blade pierces another.
On a root piece a perfect shoot forms --
ready to sprout another group of swords.
