Cuttings
Some nights your mind can't help
dissolving into dreams
and you feel her shoulders
cupped in your hands again --
the way she grafted
her white, willowy body
to yours while pressing
herself into the pages
of your memory --
the stray petals
from a blighted adolescence
leaving traces of absinthe
on her lips --
a sweet, bitter tinge
you sometimes taste
years later
on the mouths
of other women,
knowing some part
of her will always take root
in any bed
you burrow in --
leaving you to condense
back into consciousness
clutching nothing but air
in your arms.
