On Third Thought
Our life has been no Solomon's Song,
an often hapless path
slippery with liquid tears
and blood spilled from pierced hearts,
strewn with merciless whispers
and angry truths.
I start to slip the ring from my finger
and as visions of us begin to fade
I stop and hold it centered there and
contemplate the white circle of skin,
dented deep from years of wear,
and feeling naked slide it back again.
