Entrance

A chill turns
the sun's doorknob slowly

pressing on its gold light,
opening to the view
of Autumn's ripe storage.

A mother watches her child
stand on the table
reaching to pull chestnuts
from their quilled husks.

Leaves shake
like a string of bells

and they know,
country woman and girl,

the wind has come in,
wearing a starched apron
of frost.
