Knot's Landing

Calidris canutus (Linnaeus)

This carpet of birds
dines with delight
in freshly mown fields of hay
or between ocean waves or arctic ice.

The sky above, their roof
the earth, a pillow for their heads,

sociable and pleasant,
they are happiest in flocks.

Together they fly as one
or congregate upon the beach
in mudflats and in furrowed fields.

In winter they dress in gray;
in spring, red.

Short legged, robust and plump,
a delightful bird indeed.

A 'common knot' the experts say
but I've always disagreed,
for such a bird, uncommon
is the better word.
