Swan of Ebon Shame
That you would be ashamed
of ebon feathers, a lean posture
may be motive to move onward,
to burrow beside a lake you say is evil,
a swag of secrets, the rarest carp
and the reeds like dead man's fingers
reaching out through the brume.
Shame lies thick on your neck,
a jet-black shroud; hardly armor
against the rasping whispers of
skunkweed and eyeless cattails.
You shrink in their erect stature,
flee toward the tar-thick lip of murk.
It's all so clear now, unlike your
boggy reflection -- a swiveling silhouette
in the lame ripple of mimics. The
honed strands of laughter pelt from
behind. Still, you set your stance
and dive, elegant as any swan of ivory.
