The Trike Returns: Home
|
Pedaling The back wheel of Judy's bike makes snapping sounds. She has attached playing cards to the spokes to simulate the sound of a motorcycle. The sun warms our backs as we circle around on our bikes, slowly killing time. "Do you think Mommy left, yet?" Judy asks. "No, she won't leave," I tell her. "She said she was gonna pack her suitcase." I know she won't and I tell Judy that, because I have heard the yelling longer than she has, long enough to know that Mom won't ever leave. A dog barks and laundry flaps on a line, snapping like the cards on Judy's bicycle spokes. I am scared because, circling around, I know we will have to go back,to our house where they are, and she will be crying silently. She won't have the suitcase out. I know that. The sun is low in the sky and our arms are breaking out in goose bumps. We can't think what else to do and so we slowly pedal home. ~Linda Wisniewski Linda Wisniewski lives with her family in Bucks County, PA.
