Wickerworker

The twigs, pliant and young
yielded to his thin fingers
naked and pale the strips
bent in vulnerable curves
wrapping around themselves
and becoming those women
he could not hold, warped
by rougher hands, a bad
piece, never quite good enough
or molding to perfection

~Phibby Venable

Phibby writes, "I have a degree in social work. I've worked a great deal helping Appalachian families with water and home repairs. I raise children, flowers, and dogs. I've been published in several print and online magazines. Among them, Afternoon, Appalachian Journal, Apples&Oranges International, and Southern Ocean Review." This poem also appears in The Rose and the Thorn. Email.
