Learning Curve

Sofia, not yet two, lips pacifier-clamped,
and eyes a brown sparkle, twinkles through the house.
In pudgy hands an old computer mouse:
"Ola?" she asks it. Diapered, damp,
she runs away with my remote
and punches Barney up. She grins,
outsmarting all chair-bound adults
who thought to watch the news. She wins.
Though not yet two, she's mastered mysteries
of button phones and VCR's and keyboard keys;
knows what a button's for, while we
children of another age cannot quite master
programmables without disaster.
Though we are teachable -- she's faster.
