Under The Big Top

I wish I had a tiny circus
six inches across with the big top
held up by a match stick.
Everyone inside would love each other.

Elephants carved from old erasers
wouldn't fear the embroidered tigers
with their floss fangs.

The master of ceremonies in his silk suit
would wave his whip as poodles jumped
through washers fallen from a broken watch.

The curvy girl in red sequins would dangle
by her teeth and make eyes
at the tightrope walker.

There would be no tar-pavement summers,
no sudden frosts, no reason to call
home--just me, mother and father
watching over them.
