midsummer night

she met him on the green
beneath the maypole,
intimidated by the girls' quick steps,
swirling dresses, sassy laughter.

she knew she'd rescued the night
from oblivion when he danced her
away from the crowd, into the tickling
grass at the forest's edge.

for fifty-one days she never cast her eyes
on the whistling boys down by the river,
nor lingered on another name.

tonight she'll put seven different flowers
under her pillow and dream of him
clumsily claiming her hand.
