Thoughts While Waiting
I should be in Santa Fe,
not here in this parking lot two blocks off the river
waiting for someone I don't know
and probably don't want to.
I should be in Half Moon Bay,
not here in this stifling air thick enough to choke on
waiting for a suit and tie
enslaved to paid-up premiums.
I should be - oh, far away!
Not here in this driving rain beating down the window
waiting for a miracle
to fall upon my forehead.
But should is SHOULD
and is is IS
and that's the plate life's served me.
I'll garnish it with fragrant herbs,
a slice of real
and freshest fruits in season.
Devour it with delight I shall.
The shoulds -- those sour scrapings --
can be tossed where they belong:
out on the compost heap of learning.
