A Beginning

On top of the skillion,
We stood together
Looking out over the darkening ocean,
The wind lifting the water into sharp peaks.
Before us, the horizon's
Curved arc,
Reminding us how small we are
On the planet, and
How small it is
In the galaxy
And beyond.
Tiny points of light.

Our boys
The oldest just three years
The baby squirming in my arms
Full of themselves
Living for now
Each magic moment
A beginning.
Before them
This sea
Their young lives
Joy and sorrow
Filling the wide eyed intensity of their
blue eyes
Waking with excitement
As they push their powerful little bodies
Into our bed,
The life ahead of them
A start of something
Too small to see
And too tremendous to describe.
