Flashcards The substitute teacher held up the flashcard. LOVE was printed in big letters. "Does anyone know what this word is?" "Love!" a little girl in the first row answered. "That's right." One little boy timidly lifted his hand. "Yes?" "Love has four letters?" he asked, his eyes wide with awe. "Yes, it does." Giggles filled the room. "What's the matter?" "Mrs. Thomson says we shouldn't say four letter words," he answered. "This isn't one of those four letter words." "My momma says love is something men say to get you in the sack," a small girl offered. "Why would someone want to put you in a sack?" asked another. The little girl just shrugged. "Love is a big red heart. I saw it on a car and Daddy said it was love," another child said. "Love is ice-cream!" a boy in the back shouted. At that point the room exploded. Every child present had something they wanted to say, and they all wanted to be heard. It took the young substitute some time to settle them down. "Let's just continue on, shall we?" All the children nodded eagerly as she reached timidly for the next flashcard. ~S. Douglas Larsen S. Douglas Larsen lives with his wife and small son in Bilbao, Spain.
