Making The Bed

She makes the bed like a bride
whose once-flushed face
floated above the parachuting
sheet with the shutters swinging.

The cotton dress which swayed out
at the back was always tied
to her small waist with streamers
trailing while she moved.

She always held his pillow
like a confirmation, inhaled his musk,
then set the pillow down,
a sleeping lamb.

When the bedspread billowed
on the sweet air then settled impeccably
intact, she'd fold their night clothes
leg over leg, arm over arm,
until all was at rest.
