Phantom
Lovely to be in bed early, and alone
under the electric impersonal blanket’s rough
mimic sensuality, and day collapsed down
into lamplight; wind’s casual riff
jazzing the diesel’s tune. From lazy clouds
the voyeur moon lights window dust
and reminiscence kneads its claws
gently, gently. Memories flicker past
like faces in a train. When does snow
acquire its crystal lines, or how does ice
brittle itself on window glass? I never know
sleep’s instant; and the silver trace
your passing carved upon my waking mind
becomes half-phantom, fading in the night.
