Before the Daisy
Long before the daisy, ten million years
Or more, a single stem responded as if to
The famous rain that once hoisted Noah's
Curious cargo closer to an ineffective sun.
From this green, slender stalk evolved a flower
With a yellow eye surrounded by white lashes.
So too the whole world of weeds...
Once matted, tangled, and indistinguishable
From each other: gallant roses, seductive
Honeysuckle, and regal orchards all started
From an unassuming sprout and slowly, slowly
Slowly revealed their long-concealed surprise.
