Tomato Picking

When someone you loved
left the crust of earth
you always grew some ritual--
arching vines of ripe tomatoes
telling us to pick their red.

"You don't rock life
in rented black limos;
you don't waste time
canning beets when
you hate their taste.
You drink gin if
it suits you and it does.
You feed your dog
the same thing you eat
(mutal respect)
for carpe diem
well-applied.
You refrain from
picking at
trouble’s body parts.
Money’s motorcade
stays tuned to things
the world needs.
It ain't charity.
It’s steam.
So press nice pleats.
Say nice things
in lieu of not.
Burn incense
in a garden
that will catch fire,
so someone knows
fresh flowers
were there."
