Anchor Ice

Deep in the mouth of winter,
gravel lies - chill path and collar
to the sea, passage into passage.

While in the slightest arc of night
mast (star to near star - Mizor,
say, to Alcor) I see, in bad dreams:

the vertical boat, the parlor trick
gone awry, bedraggled cormorant.
This does not open my mouth

in any kind of sweet amazement
but provides only this instant
marrow of bone frozen into bone.
