Morning Moses Coulee

night at the El Rancho, tire whine.
temperature in the 50's motel.
3 cups coffee, pancake sandwich.
Richie Valens kind of kid
takes Visa in frayed plaid.

magpie wing patch flaps past.
double-wide freeway. tongue
teases idle tooth fracture, syrup
linger. broad rump sedan

big yellow caution "Merge."
seedling flatbed stacked
high apple-bound,
orange twine: "Strand
Apple" red tags tick, flicker
in off-slope plus tail-wind.

rabbit brush, crisp pale sky
line all around peppermint.
"wheat" cries the wire shrike.
"radish seed" "carrot seed"
"pink beans" this is earth -
sausage, fender dust. hayfield,
haybale, bindweed.

out west whole smoky worlds go
up. long white ridge lines where
Ginsberg scrambled. no cancer, then.
just snow on rattlesnakes.
