Dead Reckoning
I know where I am.
The sea is calm
though briefly opened
as I buried the dead in
drawstring sacks.
I have strayed off course
even while staring at
my sextant; my compass,
have gained faith in a
storm's fist while
contemplating my own
death in deep water.
I have prayed, "Not I."
Not when I'm so far from
land -- the comforting wharf --
where she'll be standing,
holding onto her little flowered
hat with with one hand,
waving to the sky, to me,
with the other.
