Silent Darkness

A dog barks in the distance
Calling out to me
Drawing me into the night
Into the silent, deadly darkness

The dog whimpers now
Calling for help
Drawing me into the night

I should not go out
Should not even look
Into the silent, deadly darkness
Yet I do
And I step into it
Let it engulf me
Let it swallow me whole

I can hear them now
The creatures of the night
Drawing me further
Coaxing me forward

The dog barks in the distance
And another one answers
A cricket chirps a lively tune
A night swallow sings merrily
A frog moans his woes

And I can see it now
The brilliance of the night
The twinkling white stars
The throbbing red stars
A meteor racing across the sky
Captured in the black net above

And I close my eyes
And I listen
And I open my heart
And I feel
And I know
I am home
