The Lady or The Tiger
Blazed with stripes,
the tiger is turning himself to butter,
lapping the air with hunger
as he chases his tail.
The lady, draped in white
with gold cord braided
through her hair,
paces her stone cell.
He is a Christ lover,
spectacle for the crowd.
He imagines lying on reed mats
with the lady.
Her hair is undone; an ocean of relief
flows over him.
"I have been a faithful servant,"
he prays. When asked to choose
he is busy
counting pebbles in the dust
with his bare feet.
