A Birdwatcher Explains an Unfinished Sketch
of Genus Egretta of the Family Ardeidae
He was some distance away, of course.
At first he stood so still, gleamed so white,
He might have been a painted plaster bird
placed there for a joke amidst the marshes.
Then the wind: his silky aigrettes stirred,
Suggestive, wasted.
a few quick strokes for the dagger bill;
almost idly down the long neck.
Then the body: tracing slow feathered curves.
I'd just reached the crucial plume
when that beautiful son of a gun
took off, headed straight into the sun,
and I lost it.
