Wichita Summer

When that low rumble
echoed above the trees,
and that far dark blot
against afternoon sky
no bigger than a hawk
became steadily larger,
finally roaring above
hedges lining the creek,
we kids ran out into the field
and waved our arms
to offer a greeting.

We were often ignored
or unnoticed by pilots
visible in cockpits
scanning the horizon,
but sometimes a pilot
would tip his wings
or even salute us
with gloved right hand
to remind us of what
awaited us out there
beyond the farthest hill
before he roared away,
becoming a set of wings,
then a steady rumble,
then nothing at all.
