After Giving a Poetry Reading

This morning
I feel I am in Paris
and the war is over.
I've been given new life,
eyes and legs. I can shuck
off the old uniform, change
into another language, can strip
the sucklings off the teat, can leap
into the Seine with no fear of drowning.
