Pear Picking
But to reach the best,
that fat golden prize
on the far upper branch,
knees are scraped while
shimmying up the trunk,
knuckles nicked grasping
branch after branch,
pride stung from swatting
away yellow jackets,
until stretching out with
arm and fingers extended,
you enclose and snap it
away from the branch.
While others mull
through tall grass,
you look out over the sky
and savor the succulent best,
juice dripping on your wounds.
