Working Girl
White hair straggling
under a red wool cap
she looks like a gnome
on vitamins.
She risks her neck
on the ice, scrapes off
the windshield of her 4WD,
scrambles over the drift
that blocks her house
from the rural road,
then heads out
across snowbound mountains
to visit patients in their homes.
Laughter bubbles
her butterscotch breath.
She does not tell
the 60-year-olds
it's her 80th birthday.
