Let-Down

I smell of milk. Even in the shower
it streams. And again --

as we drive home from dinner,
miles from the baby's wail.

Kneaded and mouthed,
muddy hours pool into weeks.

Wanting the simplicity of cud,
field, and rain --

I crop my hair to measure in inches
instead of the span of your hands.

You trace the shape of lobes,
the curve of my skull echoed in our son's.

On my back your fingertips flow in eddies.
Uncharted, a river rises between us.
