The Silver Cord Be Loosened

Every day that accumulates is a notch--
like in high school when I measured my time
in months I hadn't conceived.

Now each minute's a plea--
five months, three weeks, and four days-
the ultrasound shows me baby is okay.
One more month and this new life
could flutter on without me.

A body has a mind of its own --
it can choose to break me
or to bring forth a miracle.
May its will be mine.
