'Tis the Season

Like misers never open windows
without cursing at carolers,
so you can never decorate plastic branches
without a net loss of crystal.

So you look forward
to switching on carousel lights
that sparkle away dullness from plastic tree,
larding the beef roast

for a whirl in the microwave,
wrapping gifts that seemed
brilliant treasures during
the first hours at the mall,

answering the doorbell
in case the postman has brought
a greeting card from Mom
who stopped writing years ago.
