Kindred Spirit

Crushed in the street,
it still dances the sun
in striking flash
off its mangled form.

I toe the harmonica
with stiff-laced boot;
free it from frozen
pebble and ice;
tuck it into my pocket.

I don't wonder who played it
nor do I imagine the tinny
tunes that once wheezed
through its chambers.

I know this kindred spirit.

Once it lay warmly
against someone's lips,
and gathered each breath
to the heart.
