Adobe Dreams

The adobe walls are crumbling down around me. My wits end came and went long ago. Chickens daily peck their way through the barren wasteland of my yard, which is nothing more than dirt and tumbleweed...a dust storm on a windy day. The icebox is a 1930s special and keeps nothing cold. My floors are constantly covered in a cloud of dirt that accumulates daily from the very walls of the house. Everything is falling down around me, including the dream of peace, love and happiness with which I began my journey.

I am the last of the hippies and my call to reform is just around the corner. The only thing that keeps me within my adobe prison after so many years, after all the others have packed up and left New Mexico, is the clean crisp scent of sage that wafts in through the open windows of my rundown shack. Sage is the powerful elixir that keeps me in tie-dyes and tofu.

I sit by the window and contemplate leaving. I watch the pecking, the wind picking up from the west, and I inhale. Sage is keeping me a prisoner in paradise. I smile as I return to my sweeping.
