Changing

George approached his front door with relief, exhausted from another long accountant day. Each step helped some of the strain slough off, the muscles in his face relax: unlock the door, slip inside, lock again, place the attaché case inside the coat closet, greet Barney with the furiously wagging tail. Closer, closer to the day dropping away.

He and Barney slipped into the bedroom where he began to disrobe. He was a careful man, hanging his suit and tie. He brushed his shoes before placing them on the shoe rack then placed his cuff links and watch in the center drawer of a wooden box that sat atop the dresser. Next he placed the rest of his clothes into a blue-lined wicker hamper, then shuddered slightly.

Standing before the dresser he selected new underwear and a peach tee shirt. He sat on the edge of the sleigh bed taking his time to dress, feeling the transformation infuse his muscles with new strength, then walked across the room to the other closet. Finally he slipped into a flowered skirt then looked into the mirror and began to rock his hips as a smile crept onto his lips.
