The Humming Bridge Just as you enter the town where I grew up, there's a bridge that I always called the "humming bridge." It was made of metal grating and would hum as you drove over it. I loved the sound and especially the tickling vibration coming up through my rear end when we crossed this bridge. Now, coming home after twenty years away, the middle portion of the bridge has been paved. But I can still hear the hum even with only two tires passing over the grated portion instead of four. But I don't get the same thrill from the vibration that I did as a kid. Either the added pavement had reduced the vibration, or I need a lot more to thrill me than I did then. ~John Sheirer John Sheirer teaches at Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield, Connecticut.
