Birdwatching

for Linda D.

A chorus of morning birds --
black-capped chickadee,
robin, house wren, rufous-sided towhee.
At the feeders, at the stone bath,
they gather.

I watch and wait,
my coffee cup in hand.

Cardinal, red-breasted grosbeak, and
the first hummingbird of spring,
ruby-throated among the pink azaleas,
perched on a poplar twig.
Even the raucous cries of the blue jays
and grackles can't disturb this peace.

Sometimes, when I still my rocking chair,
a hooded warbler
lights on the porch rail -- a sign of grace.
