Talk
of that first tooth
stabbing a nipple tender
with nursing, the stream of milk
that spurts from your breast
to the infant's mouth,
the rooting and grunting
of his small-animal pleasure.
Sit with children and you learn
of woolly-bear caterpillars and the glory
of ketchup and a five-year-old peeing
on the teacher's new shoes and
a jet trail longer than a rainbow
wrapping the world.
Listen to children who talk
only of astonishing things.
