The Visit

broccoli beyond the memory of green,
the memory of standing upright

slumps as though slaughtered and left.
this woman serves overcooked

not knowing when to stop
savages what is, what was.

we teaparty from place to place
unbalanced, on edge.

the new husband whiskey talking.
the woman flutters on about

nothing we can fathom.
across the table the sister

and her husband eye each other in
vows of patience.

I touch my husband's hand,
drown the meat in sauce.
