Kylie Splashes

I watch you      shiny
     slick and slithery

arching through the water
     dolphin-like
soaking red trunks
     slipping
          down
               your barely
          five-year frame.

You stop      head up
  swaying with a wave
tiny fingers wiping watery lashes
giggling as you gulp for air.

"C'mon in Gramma," wet lips squeal.
"C'mon. It's fun!"

I laugh      wince

feel the icy water
and the bubbles
and the sweet air in my lungs

even from my dry old canvas chair

    waiting at the water's edge.

~J. Barbara Alvord

J. Barbara Alvord wrote a one-act stage play about her Czech grandmother, Anna, which was produced in an old barn at Living History Farms, Des Moines, Iowa. Her creative biography, Through Different Eyes, chronicling Anna's brave immigrant journey, is near completion. Her poetry has appeared in Lyrical Iowa, Retrozine and Byline magazine. Since her retirement from the corporate world, the written word knits her waking hours together. Email.
