Edge
Spring's dirty snow, speckled
with red lava sand and sun-pocked,
rims the two-lane road
across the Sierras.
Clinging to the narrow white line
between roadway and 300 foot drop
a bicyclist holds steady
in the logging truck's wake.
He pedals his dogged way
up the mountain, bike loaded
with extra tires, red bedroll,
tire pump, a bag of bread and salami.
Surprise in my eyes,
I blink at the man
grizzled with gray who appears
in my rearview mirror.
