Vanishing
Vespertine dreams lie dozing in the half-memories
of a faded dowager. Kisses, whispers, faces elusive
in the fog that shrouds the mind and only lifts for
seconds at a time. She stares at the late afternoon
light of autumn as it shines on the white stucco
house next door, watches its golden glow
slip up the wall until it vanishes altogether, its
warmth replaced with evening's arthritic fingers.
There is nothing she can do about such cruelty.
A whole lifetime hidden behind a velvet curtain
coated with the dust of decades. Reveries swim
to the surface only to resubmerge with the fleeting
feet of moments passed forever into darkness.
Echoes inaudible in their meaning ring with
an emptiness that makes no sound. Full fall
of night is life's last kiss of kindness. She waits
she waits, lips begging to be touched.
