Ramble-walking behind my two-year old
we come to the community mailboxes.
"Keys -- keys" she demands
and I hand her the ring.
While she tries each one
(I know none will fit --
the one she wants is at home)
I notice a neighbor's window.
Our townhouses are vanilla
four units in each:
we've talked a few times;
waved more often on the way to somewhere else.
Through the window I see things we share
(red chili pepper ristra);
things we don't
(dangling decorative spoon collection)
and wonder.
