Nest

On my bookshelf
a small bird's nest,
still crumbly inside
with the remains
of living,

Heaped from my
morning walks
with halves and quarters
of shells pale-blue,
seawater-turquoise,
brown speckles
on cream.

Lying beside the nest,
a hornet's small home,
papery circles linked,
dabs of mud dry
on the flat white shelf.

Poked in the holes
three feathers, a gull
who wore tan, two jays
in bright blue.

No longer needed,
all left behind, then
collected
to feather my nest.
