Five Steps Ahead
On a path that cuts from
ocean, through forest,
with trees two hugs round,
green and green
the soft of moss
in silence so full it makes a sound,
You walk strong and blond.
More than waist high now with
sure steps and swinging arms.
Are you showing me the way my boy?
With each press of foot to ground?
From here I see the path waiting
before you and the space
between your walk and mine.
The packed and ready earth
and I
let your feet create their pace.
I follow the eager brightness of
your curls
facing the truth of
trees and trees
without looking back.
