Hike
That's what we used to do
all day with a back pack
on twisted trails, around granite
boulders to wildflower meadows
housing alpine lakes blue
as bowls of lapis lazuli
under white clouds billowing.
Then we walked,
still on rough trails winding
over mountain flanks but
taking our time to bend
over the wildflowers, taste
the huckleberries, stop for a breather
or ten before reaching the summit.
Now we don't kid ourselves, we stroll
Along paved trails beside a mountain
lake or on railroad easements
just out of town, our bottles of water
clutched in age-spotted hands,
never too far from a biffy. I suppose
someday we'll hike in our wheelchairs.
