Carneys
"Step right up," the lady sings,
lips outlined in black
sequins cracking
dolls behind the baseballs in my hand.
"Two bits," her lips in synch
with the Ferris wheel spin
electric fingers circle
bulls' eye arm.
Eyes on Kewpie weighted smiles,
I see freedom small town life faults;
throw away the ball.
"Another two bits, doll?"
red lips curl a smile I don't trust
but I thrust another coin
at the clown face whir of lights
cotton candy shouting.
My next ball falls wild
enough to rock the shelf -
the second doll falls;
quarters my new moon.
